i use co2 to carbonate my home brew. it takes 4 or 5 days at about 30 lbs of preasure. then when i serve it 30 lbs fills the glass way too fast. i have a shut off valve at the regulator. i shut it off and let most of the preasure out of the keg. i can fill 4 or 5 bottles or glasses. as it slows down i open the valve for 1or 2 seconds and im good for 5 more beers.if your having a party, then turn the regulator down to 4 or 5 lbs and open the valve. i have each keg sitting on a 10 dollar bathroom scale inside the kegerator and have them zeroed out with a empty keg. no suprises. i always know when a keg is about empty. its amazing how accurate it is. a full keg weighs around 42 lbs. dont use digital read out scales because they shut off after a few minuites with no movement and they cost more. you will never again have to lift them to see how heavy they are to guess how much is left in them.
I am not sure who may be filling the 5lb tanks that the initial article referenced but they must not be full. A 5lb bottle will easily drive 6-8 1/2 kegs of beer . Those are the 15.5 gallon larger style kegs. Certainly if a leak was present it would be less but 2-4 kegs is wrong

However, safety was given due attention in that a CO2 monitor was installed to make [Becky] aware of any dangerous leaks. The tank is also placed on a custom scale built with load cells and an ESP8266, which allows monitoring of how much gas is left. You can also refill the 60L soda stream bottle with about 14.2 ounces of dry ice by releasing residual pressure via the built-in soda-stream neck safety valve, then remove the neck valve nd drop in the dry ice and reassemble. First subthread started by Clarke: Why are people arguing here? Taking a full lungful from the tank (dry, cold, etc) is not the same as the diminishing O2 over time from a leak. At about 5%, you start to get pretty foggy. You may never feel the buildup, and by the time 10% hits, you are in the damage zone. There is a lot of literature on this. See: It is one of the many gasses I need to be concerned with professionally, and I have no reason to disagree with Dr Clarke, nor should you. A reasonable question is: How to insure that, given the size of the bottle, there can not be a sufficient buildup to be a problem in the event of a leak.
As to the original concern of using a large CO2 bottle: Likely it is fine. The suppliers I use ship the same bottles from the same stock for beverage service and welding gas. I would hope that they are properly documented and handled to detect and prevent contamination, but I am less concerned with that since My application is welding. But it is the same gas, same stock. The actual requirement may be slightly different (99.90% for general industrial, 99.95% for USP, and 99.999 research, if I recall correctly), but in practice, it is cheaper to have every bottle meet USP. Inventory control and paperwork are not cheap. Nor is liability for sending unsuitable product.
It depends on the valve type. Acetylene valves are sealed only by stem packing. That is why they are so tight, but it allows a full seal when opened only 1/2 a turn. They also are designed for full rated flow at that opening. Opening too far has two potential issues: difficulty closing in an emergency and packing damage due to stem wear. In many plants, it is standard practice to bubble test C2H2 valve stems when a new bottle is attached and first opened, as it is fairly common for the stem packing to need a little takup from wear or over-opening. The fill station personnel SHOULD check, but may miss one (or just not bother, in some cases)
If you love seltzer and drink it often, carbonating water at home can be a more economical, environmentally friendly, and convenient alternative to purchasing cans, cases, or bottles of seltzer or soda. It can also be more fun, giving you the freedom to play with all sorts of bubbly options.
Fewer demands on hand strength and mobility: Soda makers can require a slew of fiddly hand motions, including screwing or locking in a CO2 canister and a water bottle, pushing and holding down a flimsy plastic button, and unscrewing a tightly sealed, pressurized cap. No soda maker is perfectly accessible, but in our tests we noted the motions necessary to operate each soda maker, and we ruled out any egregiously difficult-to-use machines.
You can use any 8-gram carbon dioxide charger for the OTE soda maker, but only the 8-gram size works. Be sure not to confuse them with whipped-cream chargers, which use nitrous oxide (N2O). You can find packs of carbon dioxide chargers on Amazon and at restaurant-supply stores, and they usually cost between 50¢ and $1 per charger, which might not work out to be cheaper than a bottle of seltzer depending on how many chargers you buy at once. CO2 chargers are made of steel, a recyclable metal; as long as your chargers are empty, you should be able to recycle them however you recycle metal where you live.
Beyond reducing the number of cans and bottles you consume, the environmental impact of switching from buying seltzer comes from decreasing the carbon cost of shipping. Carbonated water is heavier, and so more carbon-consuming to ship, than CO2 cylinders, and each cylinder allows you to produce many more servings of soda than you get from a similar-size can of seltzer.
